In October at the Nash Gallery

Nature Under Our Noses:  Life In and Around Our Warm Water Ponds
Photography by Barry Draper
Gordon-Nash Library Exhibit:  October 2013

As part of his on-going program, “Nature Under Our Noses”, Barry Draper of New Hampton takes us into the habitat of local warm water ponds in his latest photography exhibit at the Gordon-Nash Library, Main Street in New Hampton, NH.  The exhibit runs throughout the month of October.  The opening reception is planned for Thursday, October 10, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Barry has been a science teacher, photographer and environmentalist for the past 40 years.  His life work reflects a deep respect for the earth and its many creatures and wild places.  He combines teaching and photography in the classroom, on the nature trail, and throughout his travels.

Since retiring from the Sant Bani School, Barry has turned to community activities.  He works with the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, the Pemigewasset River Local Advisory Council, and the Conservation Commission in New Hampton.  During the summer, he leads groups on walks at Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough.  He shares his expertise with school groups and organizations, such as the Circle Camp in Groton and the National Writing Project writing camps and teacher workshops in Plymouth and Laconia.

He has shared his nature photography and talks since the 1980’s.  In March 2011, he held a solo exhibition of Nature Under Our Noses at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.  Barry has offered programs on wildlife, habitats, and local ecology to schools in New England, Scotland and England, the Jakarta International School in Indonesia, Taiwan, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica.

His latest show at the Gordon-Nash Library brings out the visual beauty and complexities of our local warm water ponds.  Barry’s photographs of loons, herons, turtles, insects, raptors and amphibians represent the diversity and changes over time of these community assets.
